Born in Virginia, and raised in Atlanta, I have made my home in the city for nearly 40 years. Even as a child, I knew I would be an artist. Around the age of 8, I began signing my work “Daphne the Artist” and “Daphne the Great.” I have pursued that dream, completely self-taught, since that time.

In the mid-70’s, while still a student at Atlanta’s North Fulton High School, I began selling my abstract needlepoint designs to an upscale retail outlet. This was my earliest training in color and composition. From there, I began creating custom orders for clients.

My next step was fabric design. I sold a line of pillows to various commercial clients, including Lord & Taylor and the Atlanta Merchandise Mart. My repertoire of usable designs soon expanded to include rugs, lamps, furniture, vases, and other accessories for the home. Eventually, my artwork sold through other retail outlets and wholesale furniture and gift catalogs.

In 1985, I was introduced to ceramic art. It was a good match, and my very first piece sold immediately. I received a kiln as a wedding gift and promptly set it up in the guest bedroom. I fired and painted vases, plates, tiles, and sculptures. Ironically, I have only one vase left from the thousands I created.

Since 2000, I have worked as a mixed-media painter. My preferred mediums are oils, chalks, colored pencils, charcoals, and ink. Most of my paintings are supported by large and mid-size canvases and wood. I also paint on hand-made paper and personally mat and frame each piece. I build many complex layers to create my abstract and playful designs. My influences come from such artists as Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Kandinsky, and Basquiat. However, my unstructured approach expresses my unique energy.

In 2003 and 2004, I was voted best local artist by Atlanta’s Southern Voice magazine. My work also has been featured in Trends Magazine and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle Magazine. And while participating in outdoor art festivals, I have won numerous awards in all mediums.

I exhibit at fine art festivals throughout the country.  I also accept commissioned work.  For more information about a specific piece, to view current inventory, or to make an appointment to visit my studio, please contact me at covingtonart@live.com.
